Wife’s weight in beer
The World Wife-Carrying Championship began as a light-hearted, fun celebration in the small town of Sonkajärvi, Finland. It has since become a world recognized sporting competition. The competition is the modern evolution of an ages-old tradition of wife-stealing, a practice once commonplace in villages of eastern Finland. Young men would sneak into nearby villages, steal the wife of another man, usually carrying her away on his back. The stolen wife was then forced to marry her abductor. In today’s competition, the ladies are willing participants who happily volunteer to assist their partners in the race. The couple who finishes in first place receives the wife’s weight in beer.
